The Millhand’s Cottage sits on land that has watched the Yarra River wind its quiet course for centuries. Originally part of country cared for by the Wurundjeri people, this place grew from a simple working cottage built around 1903 to house millworkers and their families as timber and flour milling shaped the valley’s early industry. Weathered timber boards and stonework hold stories of hands steady at looms, ovens warmed by wood fires, and nights lit by oil lamps.

By the mid-20th century, as mills closed and towns changed, the building faced neglect before being lovingly restored by local residents determined to preserve a tangible link to their past.

Today, The Millhand’s Cottage is both museum and homey retreat, inviting visitors to step back into a way of life shaped by river, timber and community.
